  • Home Insurance Basics

    In super duper plain english!

    What is Home Insurance?

Your home is one of the biggest investments you'll make. Yet this investment can disappear within seconds if there's a tornado, fire or natural disaster. Home insurance is there to rescue you in these horrible times of calamity.

A home insurance policy covers much more than just damage to your house. There are many additional coverages within a policy that can help you from financial disaster.

    What can be covered?

    • Your home to replacement cost value.
    • Your belongings. (Most often 50% of your dwelling coverage)
    • Certain structures outside of your home, such as a detached garage or fence. (This is often 10% of your dwelling coverage.
    • Loss of use. This provides additional living expenses you incur if you cannot live in your home during repair or construction. This includes rental or hotel bills, meals, etc. (Often this is 20% of your dwelling amount.)
    • Liability coverage. This coverage is protection from lawsuits or injuries.
    • Medical. This coverage is for persons injured on your property or by your pet.

There're other items that may be covered, so check your policy or ask your agent:

    • Damaged or downed trees, lawn or shrubs
    • Debris removal
    • Food spoilage due to damage or power outage
    • Identity theft
    • Jewelry
    • Firearms
    • Computer equipment
    • Antiques or other valuables
    • And much more

    What's NOT covered?

    • We get this question all the time. Does my home insurance policy cover flood and/or earthquake. The answer is no.

You will need to buy separate policies for those if you want coverage from those natural disasters. Also, in certain areas of the country you will need separate windstorm coverage.
